Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has promised to hold elections in the near future once his consumption tax bill clears the final hurdle in parliament.
Mr Noda was forced to make the pledge after the main opposition Liberal Democratic party threatened to withdraw support for the bill unless a general election is called.
